Werner tough: Apple Watch: We Germans hate new. Sorry! – Business Week

Column of Marcus Werner

It goes without saying: The technical innovations now come from the United States. We Germans just do not feel like it. We are rather skeptical.

What would never do we Germans find new right away well

It was in 1991, when I told my father as a birthday present an answering machine. So cute with a tape cassette in it. Jesse, that was brave, for innovative technology had in our family not so correct Lobby:

1983 “A VCR does not come into our house then we’re all just watching TV.. ” (Bought 1986)

1987: “microwave feeding do not like that.” (Bought 1990)

1988 “.? A CD player No What will become of our old records” (Bought 1990)

1990: “Since we do not have cable TV but only comes scrap..” (Port 1992)

1999: “We understand our age no more.” (Internet contract since 2001)

2000: “Why should I want to make calls when I’m not home?” (Bought mobile 2002)

2002 “. I want to keep photos but in the hands” (Bought digital camera 2003)

2010: “Smartphones are too complicated for us.” (IPhone gifted 2011)

2012: “. What an iPad Not yet such a device” (Bought 2013)

Many of us dare to new zoom only when others rave about it long ago. Considering the national economy, it must be said: This is too late

“New Geil!”. Something is considered to have naive.

You do not find anything great, yes, just because it’s new. But we should consider a new benevolent. And not just to convince us that we currently can not do without it with sorrow and distress.

In Germany, people today have little in international comparison smartphones and little LTE contracts , And because of the alleged frills far less money was worth more than other nations, gapes with our lame Internet with us a real location disadvantage. Or really

does anyone believe that we are not so much mobile internet in Germany need as anywhere else? We mosern on Amazon’s market power over Google’s and Facebook’s data hungry and on the production conditions at Apple’s suppliers. But where do we make it better? While we whine about dying city centers, Amazon is growing just keep

ascent with a dark side. How does Amazon

  • What began Amazon?
    “13″

Jeff Bezos founded in 1995. The German amazon.com offshoot amazon.de there since 1998. Great was the company with the shipment of books, videos and music CDs. Since the year 2000, foreign retailers can offer their products on Amazon. Meanwhile, the Group makes Seattle-based two-thirds of its sales with products such as computers, digital cameras, fashion and food. Amazon is also one of the pioneers in electronic books and music and video downloads. Second major pillar in addition to the trade are the web with cloud computing.

  • How could the Group are as powerful

Amazon is making a risky growth strategy: The company attracts customers with competitive prices and a fast and often free delivery. He also invested heavily in the shipping centers as well as in the development of new technology. However, this growth has a downside: the profit margins are rather thin. Last year, Amazon made a loss of 39 million dollars. In the first quarter remained bottom line is $ 108 million (78 million euros) – in a trading revenues of $ 19.7 billion

  • <. h5 class="HCF-triangle-right"> How important is the German market?

It is the largest foreign market. Last year, Amazon began in this country of 8.7 billion dollars converted these are currently around 6.5 billion euros. Germany thus ahead of Japan 7.8 billion and the UK with 6.5 billion dollars. However, the most important market in general is North America 34.8 billion dollars. Amazon grew up in his native least much faster than abroad.

  • How important is for Amazon Germany?

In terms of retail sales total is the role of Amazon manageable. About 1.5 percent contributes Amazon in the industry sales of nearly 428 billion euros. But most are food. Looking at the online retail of consumer electronics to books, things look quite different: Amazon stops here almost a quarter of the market

  • As the Group is set up?

In Germany, the company has distribution centers in ditch near Augsburg, Bad Hersfeld, Leipzig, Rheinberg, Werne, Pforzheim and Koblenz. Work, where information from Amazon about 7,700 salaried full-time employees. At peak times such as Christmas sales come in each of these centers add thousands of seasonal workers. Worldwide worked the year 88,400 permanent employees in the company.

  • harm the Shit Storm? ‘ / h5>

Amazon even commented on demand so far not about whether the ARD documentary was less ordered since the broadcast. However, a comparison suggests: Too much caring Amazon does not do well. Also on the German rivals Zalando raged already – albeit small – storm of excitement after reports of poor working conditions. At the sharp increase in sales that did not change. From 2011 until 2012 Zalando doubled its revenues of 510 million to 1.15 billion euros.

  • Follow the Leiharbeiterskandals

This is difficult to estimate. The outrage has reached the policy and it is election campaign. However, the allegations of mistreatment of contract and temporary workers are directed primarily against the employment agencies. Which threatens the Federal Ministry of Labour now with a special audit. The company itself does not respond. Payment on Amazon, however, corresponds well with the applicable standards. With a gross hourly wage of at least EUR 9.30 Amazon pays more than the legal minimum wage for temporary workers, which is currently in the west at € 8.19 and € 7.50 in the East.

  • Where Amazon still anger has

In the UK there were in the past year a debate about how Amazon and other US corporations expressed by legal tricks before paying taxes. An Amazon representative had to appear before a parliamentary committee and was taken there by the parliamentarians front of the cameras in the wringer. In the US, employees had complained that they had to toil in the hot summer in non-conditioned warehouses. According to US media reports, several employees suffered dizzy spells. Amazon responded and upgraded air conditioning systems.

  • But rethinking pays off. The German book trade has teamed up and established through its e-reader Tolino time a successful competitor to Amazon’s Kindle. And the customers appreciate that. The book trade could stop his shrink course.

supermarket chains such as Rewe and Emperor try with force, much marketing pressure and various vouchers to establish their delivery services in Germany. Because Amazon will soon also deliver food in Germany. In the US, these vices take vegetables stickers on the rear already around. But here in our German entrepreneurs were the first ones. Smaller delivery services such as shop Wings in Munich and Berlin risk their happiness. Store Wings concerned the same products multiple retailers such as Aldi, Lidl, Edeka and Alnatura and supplies in the shortest time (starting two hours later) for 4.90 euros extra. This is refreshingly new.

We somehow keep so much cash in hand. Since you know what you have and not lose track. We Germans bring with them not even have the heart to abolish the stupid 1-cent piece. In the production costs are above face value. But with money issues, we Germans are so emotional because of our history and such.

    Well.
