The Internet company Google has apparently incorporated into one of the most famous robot developers in the world: How the New York Times reports, Google has completed the acquisition of the company Boston Dynamics. The company based in Massachusetts is mostly known for that it has developed robot with a good sense of balance, which can run as fast in part as the fastest sprinter in the world. Boston Dynamics has also worked on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense.
Now shoot the speculation about Google’s strategy in the field of robotics into the herb. Because Boston Dynamics is indeed perhaps the best known, but by far not the only company in the industry that has bought in the recent past, the Internet giant. Only seven other robot companies there have been in the past half year.
Google’s robotics area had least so made headlines because Andy Rubin, the former manager for the Android operating system, now in charge of the division. Google apparently pumped significant resources into the project. Among the acquisitions in the field of robotics, for example, a supplier of cameras that have come in the development of the space film “Gravity” is used.
What exactly Rubin cooking up with his group of robots, is not really clear. However, there are apparently no robots are developed that are even purchased by end users. Rather, Google aims for example on industrial production from, the recent speculation. A possible application is the still largely manual production of electronic devices, it said in an earlier report in the New York Times. Are also conceivable applications in online trading such as an automated delivery. Thus, Google would therefore have similar objectives such as Amazon with its drones plan.
Rubin compared his robot project recently with the model developed by Google self-driving car, which had initially consulted by “science fiction”, but is now pretty close to reality. According to Google, the cars could already have their market debut in 2017. With the new robot initiative Google is aiming for according to the report, to provide “sooner rather than later” salable products. CEO Page but writes on his “Google plus” side, the project is still at a very early stage.
