Exactly 30 years ago, on 27 September 1983 Richard Stallman announced the GNU project. Stallman’s goal: a Unix-like operating system free software – free as in the later, also founded by Stallman Free Software Foundation: GNU software one may use arbitrary, inspect and modify their source code, and you may not modify the Software or to pass unchanged. ” / p>
Stallman’s vision has been realized in the form of GNU / Linux, a Unix-like operating system from the GNU userland tools, the Linux kernel (the Linus Torvalds, to this day developed using GNU tools). And finally, the GNU project was the nucleus of a worldwide community of users and developers who work together to ensure that free software is getting better.
GNU is actually one of these so popular among programmers recursive acronyms: GNU stands for “GNU’s Not Unix”
