"Mars One" selected 1058 participants from for mission to the Red planet - Spiegel Online

Amsterdam – It is a journey of no return: For a mission to Mars, which prepares the Dutch organization “Mars One,” one of the first selection round has now come to an end. Of more than 200,000 people from 140 countries, the first 1058 participants were selected.

In further stages should remain as “Mars One” announced on Thursday within a TV show 24 Selected. The organization of the show inventor Bas Lansdorp want to stop taking from 2025, a total of six groups of four on the Red Planet. They are there to build a colony. Return trips to Earth are not provided.

In a statement Lansdorp announced that the organization was very grateful and impressed by the variety of people who had applied for the mission. Some would take the project but also not so serious. “We even had a few people who are naked encountered in their application videos.” The next rounds will find in this and next year instead.

“Mars One” demanded by at least 18 years old, have a safe health, social skills and good knowledge of English. Who is selected, the radiation during the seven-month flight and landing must survive.

The project has met with skepticism, but with the Dutch Nobel Prize winner Gerard ‘t Hooft also a prominent supporter. So far, only unmanned robotic vehicles were sent to Mars. In November launched the U.S. probe “Maven” in the direction of Mars. In August 2012, the NASA research robot “Curiosity” landed on the planet.
